Gayatri Mantra: meaning and how to chant
A prayer for a clear, awakened mind. It asks the divine light to guide our thinking.
Addressed to Savitr, the divine light of the Sun · Source: Rigveda 3.62.10
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः
Om. Across the earth, the space between, and the heavens,
Om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं
we turn to that most worthy light of Savitr,
tat savitur vareṇyaṃ
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि
and meditate on the radiance of the divine.
bhargo devasya dhīmahi
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्
May it inspire and guide our minds.
dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt
Saral arth
Hum us divya roshni ka dhyaan karte hain jo teeno lokon mein hai. Wo hamari buddhi ko sahi disha de.
How it is chanted
- Traditionally chanted at sunrise, noon and sunset (the three sandhyas), facing east in the morning.
- A common count is 108 times with a rudraksha or tulsi mala; 11 or 21 times is fine on busy days.
- Chant slowly and clearly. Understanding the meaning matters more than speed.
Traditional belief
Believed to sharpen focus and memory, bring mental calm, and strengthen the Sun's influence in the chart.
This describes what the tradition holds, not a scientific or medical claim.
