Mahamrityunjaya Mantra: meaning and how to chant

A prayer for protection, healing and freedom from fear, addressed to Shiva.

Addressed to Lord Shiva as Tryambaka, the three-eyed one · Source: Rigveda 7.59.12

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे
Om. We worship the three-eyed Lord,
Om tryambakaṃ yajāmahe
सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
who is fragrant and who nourishes all life.
sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्
Like a ripe cucumber that falls free from its vine,
urvārukam iva bandhanān
मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्
may we be freed from death, but never from the immortal.
mṛtyor mukṣīya mā'mṛtāt
Saral arth

Hum Mahadev ki pooja karte hain jo sabka paalan karte hain. Jaise paka phal bel se apne aap alag ho jaata hai, waise hi hum dar aur mrityu ke bandhan se mukt hon.

How it is chanted
  • Often chanted 108 times, especially on Mondays and during Shravan.
  • Families traditionally chant it together when someone is unwell or facing a difficult time.
  • Sit facing north or east; a diya and a calm space help you settle.
Traditional belief

Believed to protect health, ease fear and anxiety, and soften difficult planetary periods.

This describes what the tradition holds, not a scientific or medical claim.
